Jordan and Mary
Jordan created by Nebulon Ranger, Mary created by ProfLeighton. Both written by Lord X-Giga-X.

Jordan and Mary are the protagonists of this game. This isn't to say they're your standard "blank slate", however- both of them have their own developed backstories which are intrinsically tied to the premise of the game. Jordan's brother was arrested for taking part in the Deathmatch Circuit; Mary's father was killed by a gang involved in it.

Play as Jordan, and your rival is Mary, and vice versa. Whoever you don't choose is your childhood friend, perhaps even your best friend, to the point where even the local people of Granite Town recognize that you're inseparable. Though the first leg of your journey is undertaken separately from each other, there comes a point where you become traveling companions. Even if you're downright awful to your supposed friend, you stick together. But how long would that last?

At age 16, Altaris's legal age of majority, they set out to start their journeys. Despite having powerful, evolved Pokémon at home, L the Lucario and Cherish the Quilava are housepets and not prepared for the harsh and cutthroat environment that is Altaris. But, really, are the two of you prepared either?

Jordan's limited battle experience makes him overly confident in his abilities, and Mary is held back by the shadows of her shattered family. As rivals, the two are friendly with you, even with a hint of interest that you may or may not pursue. But without you there to help him or her, it's fairly clear that your rival wouldn't last more than a few days in your home region-- a fact both observed and repeatedly pointed out by one of your other rivals.

Mary and Jordan choose the starter weak to your own at Professor Spruce's lab in Shardil Town. Otherwise, their exact team differs based on which rival it is.
